Stealing Your Sleep: Why Your Toothache Hurts More at Night

When trying to go to sleep, do you notice that your toothache seems to worsen? The moment you lie down in bed, it’s all you can think about. There are several reasons why this can happen, so it’s important that you find ways to keep it from stealing your sleep. Keep reading to learn what you can do.

Reason #1: Lying Down Intensifies Pain.

The moment you lie down, blood begins to rush to the top part of your body (i.e., face, mouth, brain, etc.). As a result, additional pressure is placed on your teeth, which can cause intensified pain.

The best thing you can do is to keep your head elevated when going to bed. This will prevent blood from rushing to this part of your body and causing more discomfort.

Reason #2: Teeth Grinding Causes Soreness.

Teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism) can be an unconscious habit that occurs while you sleep. When your teeth move against each other, it can wear down the enamel and cause discomfort, similar to how a toothache might feel.

Ask your dentist about a customized nightguard you can wear to protect your teeth and relieve any pain you might experience each night.

Reason #3: Receding Gums Leads to Hurt Teeth.

When gum disease begins to affect the roots of your teeth, you will discover they become more sensitive to anything hot or cold. You might also notice increased pain when brushing your teeth. If you do any of these before bedtime, do not be surprised if your teeth hurt when trying to sleep.

Treatment for gum disease is essential if you want to avoid worsening complications (i.e., bone loss, loose teeth, etc.). You can also ask your dentist about using desensitizing toothpaste to achieve relief.

Reason #4: Cavities Can Be the Culprit.

Cavities often range in size, with many of the smaller ones not causing much pain throughout the day or night. However, if it grows larger, it can lead to an abscess, which can affect the nerve of the tooth. Once additional pressure is applied (when lying down), you will notice greater pain at night.

Undergo treatment for your cavity the moment you learn about it. This will ensure you maintain better oral health and continue to get much-needed sleep.

Don’t dread going to bed. Instead, make the necessary changes and seek appropriate treatment to improve the health of your smile and quality of your sleep.
